An exciting matchup should be in the offing on Sunday as Louisville hosts Kentucky in the battle for the Governor’s Cup. Kentucky was 8-5 last season but suffered a number of off-season losses and is looking at a rebuilding season. Louisville slipped to 6-6 last season and missed out on a bowl game for the first time in more than 10 years. Second year head coach Steve Kragthorpe is looking for better things this season. All of the receivers are also gone so Louisville is going to slip offensively this season. The defense is not in much better shape as just four starters return. Ron English is the new defensive coordinator for the Cardinals.

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier is not making any predictions about this year’s football team just yet. Last season the Gamecocks started 6-1 but collapsed down the stretch, losing their last five games and missing out on a bowl game. That has put the pressure squarely on Spurrier to produce this season. They open up the season with an interesting test as Tom O’Brien’s North Carolina State Wolfpack come to town.
“We’re trying to stay a little bit underneath the radar, whatever you want to call it, about not trying to talk too big and, hopefully, let our play do whatever talking needs to be said,” Spurrier said, “I don’t know we’ve got a really good team, an average team or what. I don’t know yet.” The Gamecocks are only 21-16 under Spurrier and the pressure is starting to build on the old ball coach. “Time can only tell if we’re a different team than in the (past) three years I’ve been here,” Spurrier said. South Carolina is starting the season with unproven junior quarterback Tommy Beecher who has thrown only 24 passes in his career. The good news for Spurrier is that his defense is excellent. They have both Jasper Brinkley and Nathan Pepper back from injury.
The key for North Carolina State will be to run the ball and play defense. New quarterback Russell Wilson may be in for a long night facing that tough South Carolina defense. The Wolfpack have a solid defensive as well led by defensive end Willie Young and defensive tackle Alan Michael Cash.

Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace has been excellent this preseason but is unlikely to see much time since he has a sore groin so that means third string quarterback Charlie Frye will get the bulk of the snaps on Monday for Seattle. “Absolutely your starting quarterback has to be ready for the first regular-season game,” Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren said, “(With) the guys that have played as long as he has played … you are not quite as concerned about their minutes in the preseason. Now, I want him (Hasselbeck) to feel better. That’s my main concern. But as far as not playing or not getting enough reps, I don’t worry about that too much.” Seattle is also missing receivers Bobby Engram and Deion Branch due to injuries.
